India on a shopping spree.

Looking at the news over the past few weeks, it becomes evident that India has been shopping and I must say splurging. Majority of the purchases at the government level have been primarily for defense. India has become the largest Purchaser of arms among the developing nations of the world, taking over China and Saudi Arabia. Is all this defense expenditure justified? Are we spending a little too much too soon? Patriot missile systems, European Submarines, F-16 and Hornet fighters are we going overboard? Should we not be saving for the rainy days as well ?

I think the current purchase of Scorpene submarines from France is a good move in two senses: (a) To replace the ageing subs that we have (b) To please our friends and get their good will + some favours that we get in return :-)

hi arun

well i think that that INDIA should concentrate more on developing India rather than showing off its supremacy. there are many underdeveloped areas in India which still doesn't have the basic neccesities to lead a proper life. why can't people understand that creating and maintaining a thing is much much more difficult than destroying.

Well its nothing but a political gimmick , almost all these deals will materialise in about 10-15 years from now.
And sanctions and embargoes not withstanding it will be a dark day in June when India can boast of having State of the art weapon systems at par with the superpowers.
Another Joke which is doing the rounds is that the US is probably going to sell India a 40 year old frigate which they have decommissioned 20 years back.Well India will certainly be on good terms with the US if junk deals like the above materialise.
